In the sixties in Austria, jazz was in the hands of amateurs, predominantly students of fields other than music. No jazz existed in music schools, none at college level. Radio and television were interested in jazz, and this resulted in a series of so-called Amateur Jazz Festivals. This picture was taken during the 1968 Vienna amateur jazz festival at the Vienna Konzerthaus, then a temple of classical music. This photo shows the Royal Flush Orchestra in action. Helmut Schwarzer is in the foreground on the piano, Franz Leberl on the drums in the left.

In the sechziger-Jahren war Jazz eine Angelegenheit von Amateuren, meist Studenten in Fachgebieten, die nichts mit Musik zu tun hatten. Es gab keinen Jazz in Musikschulen und schon gar nicht in den Musikhochschulen. Aber Radio und Fernsehen waren an Jazz interessiert, also kam es zur Abhaltung eines Amateurjazzfestivals, etwa im Jahr 1968 im Konzerthaus, damals ein Tempel klassicher Musik.
